Interactions – Session 5

Lisbon, a city for all Ages: the role of public space

17.02.2021

In urban rehabilitation, the quality of public spaces is important to improve social interaction and promote active and healthy aging. However, in urban planning there is a tendency to emphasize the building and security of the elderly, while social needs, such as the social participation of the elderly, are often not considered as much. The reinforcement of the interconnection between the built and security components and the components of social participation and citizenship is one of the great challenges that those responsible for urban planning, public security services and political decision makers will face, increasingly, in the meshes that city weaves.

In the fifth session of the InterActions Symposium, issues related to the social well-being and safety of older people in the public space will be discussed, and the mechanisms of urban planning that can be used to reinforce their social participation and citizenship rights.
