The four short films on Macau, made available by the Portuguese Cinematheque, trace a cinematic and ideological journey through the territory across the twentieth century. Produced between 1923 and 1974 by Manuel Antunes Amor, Ricardo Malheiro and António Lopes Ribeiro, these works reveal different ways of viewing Macau, from celebrating urban and monumental progress in the early decades to emphasizing its historical, religious and symbolic heritage as a meeting point between East and West.
From highlighting urban and architectural development in the 1920s, through the exaltation of religious and historical heritage in the 1950s, to documenting official visits and affirming the symbolic Portuguese presence in the East, the films also illustrate the use of cinema as an instrument of political and cultural affirmation. This is particularly evident in the records of official visits and in the construction of a narrative of continuity between Portugal and the territory.
