The Recolhimento de São Cristóvão originated, according to legend, in a shelter founded in 1598 by Diogo Lopes Solis to house orphaned and abandoned young women.

Built in the Escadinhas da Achada in 1610, this shelter was originally known as the Recolhimento de Nossa Senhora do Amparo.

The entrance bears a stone inscription reading: “Praised be the Most Holy Sacrament. This shelter is of Our Lady of Refuge and orphaned girls. Our Father for the souls 1610.”
