Santa Casa opens the third floor of the Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação de Alcoitão
This refurbished and modernised facility is designed for the inpatient rehabilitation of adults and has a capacity of 68 beds.

Last Friday, 9 January, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa opened the third floor of the Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação de Alcoitão (CMRA), a refurbished and modernised facility for adult rehabilitation inpatients, with a capacity of 68 beds, representing an investment of around 2 million euros.
This project forms part of a broader strategy to improve the infrastructure and services at this Misericórdia de Lisboa facility, consolidating its status as a national and international centre of excellence in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and reinforcing the institution’s Compromisso with the community in the field of healthcare.
The opening ceremony was attended by Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho, Minister for Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, and Nuno Piteira Lopes, Mayor of Cascais, both of whom were welcomed by Paulo Sousa, Provedor of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, and other members of the Board.
For the Provedor of Santa Casa, the transformation project involving the CMRA “goes far beyond the physical building works”, also involving “an investment in people, technology and digital transformation, to ensure a substantial improvement in care”.
“In 2026, we will have the honour of celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Alcoitão Centre. These are six decades of uninterrupted dedication to rehabilitation, a legacy of innovation and care that fills us with pride and propels us into the future,” said Paulo Sousa.
For her part, the Minister for Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho, commented that “the refurbishment of this floor was very much deserved” and emphasised, in her view, “Santa Casa’s return to social work in the area where it excels: caring for those in need”.
Nuno Piteira Lopes, Mayor of Cascais, also expressed his “enormous satisfaction” at this opening, which “symbolises renewal, commitment and a vision for the future, out of respect for a long, solid and deeply human history” such as that of the Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação de Alcoitão.
