Guided tours of the Museum and Church of St Roque offer an in-depth exploration of one of Lisbon’s most remarkable heritage ensembles. The Church, renowned for its Mannerist and Baroque architecture, survived the 1755 earthquake almost intact, preserving a rare and valuable collection. Highlights include the Chapel of St John the Baptist, one of the richest ensembles of eighteenth-century sacred art, commissioned in Rome and installed in Lisbon with great splendor, and currently undergoing the process of classification as a National Treasure.
At the St Roque Museum, founded in 1905, visitors can admire not only the Treasury of the Chapel of St John the Baptist, but also sixteenth-century paintings of St Roch. The collection reveals the global reach of the Jesuit mission through sacred artworks, liturgical vestments and devotional objects that bear witness to centuries of spirituality and cultural exchange between East and West. The final section tells the story of the Lisbon Holy House of Mercy, founded in 1498, which since 1768 has ensured the preservation and enhancement of this unique Portuguese heritage site.
