This lecture offers an analysis of the Silk Roads as complex networks of mobility and exchange that shaped pre-Islamic landscapes and global connectivity. Drawing on archaeological and historical perspectives, we will explore how the movement of goods, ideas and people between Central Asia and the Mediterranean defined some of the earliest forms of globalization. The session will address both the “paths travelled” – revealed through the explorations that helped establish this field of study – and the “paths yet to be explored”, reflecting on emerging themes and the enduring relevance of these routes for understanding contemporary cultural dynamics.
