Given their scope, the Social Games offer a very rich insight into the history of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, which, in 1783, was granted the right to operate the lotteries by royal decree of Queen D. Maria I. At the time, this social game provided invaluable support, enabling the institution to care for the most vulnerable in a dignified manner.
