Convento de São Pedro de Alcântara
The Convento de São Pedro de Alcântara is set within the Bairro Alto, in the very heart of Lisbon. Founded in the 17th century by the 1st Marquis of Marialva, it was occupied by the Order of St Francis and, later, by the Recolhimento das Órfãs da Congregação da Apresentação de Maria.
Founded in the 17th century, the Convento de São Pedro de Alcântara was almost entirely destroyed in 1755, with reconstruction beginning in 1783. The Church, predominantly Baroque, reflects a harmonious blend of gilded woodwork and 18th-century monochromatic tiles. Particularly noteworthy are the ceiling frescoes and an original canvas depicting the “Coronation of Our Lady by the Holy Trinity”.
