Hospital Ortopédico de Sant’Ana

Rua de Benguela, Parede

The Sant’Ana Orthopaedic Hospital, on the coastal road linking Lisbon and Cascais, in Parede, was founded in 1904 by Claudina Chamiço as the Sanatório de Sant’Anna.

It was specifically designed for underprivileged girls suffering from tuberculosis, aged 4 to 14, and to care for patients in the terminal phase, for which it relied on the support of the Sisters of St Vincent de Paul and, later, from 1910, the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena.

It comprises a building that reflects the splendour of Art Nouveau. Its long façade, parallel to Avenida Marginal, reveals the eclectic taste of early 20th-century Portuguese architecture, combined with a strong functional capacity, clearly expressed in the arrangement of spaces, services and facilities.

The Sant’Ana Orthopaedic Hospital is today a national and international reference in orthopaedics and trauma care.
